A 20-year-old man has today, Thursday 2 October 2008, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm after a 16-year-old girl was shot in the head in Gorton.

He is due to be sentenced on 24 October 2008.

Shortly after 6am on Saturday 14 June 2008, police were called to an address on Ashover Avenue, Gorton, following reports of a shooting.

A teenager who raped a woman and attacked another has been convicted at Manchester Crown Court.
The 17-year-old, who is from Gorton but cannot be named for legal reasons, had pleaded guilty to rape at an earlier hearing.

He was today, Wednesday 1 October 2008, found guilty of attempted rape after a two-day trial.

At 5.30pm on Wednesday 9 January 2008 a 17-year-old girl had been walking along a path off Varna Street, Gorton, referred to locally as the "Yellow Brick Road".

Hearing footsteps behind her she turned round and saw the 17-year-old, who was 16 at the time, exposing himself.

He then stepped in front of her, blocking her path, and demanded she perform a sexual act on him.

She refused but the teen grabbed her arms and started pushing on her head.

The victim struggled with him and eventually managed to break free of his grasp and hit him in the face.

His glasses fell off and he released her. She ran away.

Two days later on Friday 11 January 2008 an 18-year-old woman was walking through Debdale Park in Gorton on her way home from her boyfriend's house.

Although it was only midday, the woman was wary about being in the park alone and was paying close attention to anyone else who was around.

She was approached by the 17-year-old who asked her the time and she answered politely and continued walking, hoping he would leave her alone.

The boy then approached her again. He was masturbating and made lewd comments to her, demanding she perform sex acts on him.

When she refused his demands the 17-year-old threatened to stab her. He said he would attack her if she didn't do what he said.

Believing him and fearful for her safety the victim did what he said. He took her to a quiet spot off the path and stifled her attempts to scream by putting his hand over her mouth. There he raped her.

Afterwards, the 17-year-old stole the victim's phone before walking away.

The victim had been on the phone to her boyfriend's sister when the attack started, so her family had started to look for her. As she made her way out of the park they found her in a very distressed state.

They then saw the 17-year-old walking along High Bank. He was arrested a short time later after running away.

A woman who said that she had just bought the victim's mobile phone from the defendant then contacted the police.

The 17-year-old was later charged with the offences. He is due to be sentenced on 11 November 2008.

Detective Constable Roy Storey said: "This boy is a violent pervert who cannot control his urges. His victims, particularly the poor girl who he raped, have been traumatised by his sick actions. The Gorton area will certainly be safer for women now that this persistent offender is off the streets.

"I'd like to praise the courage of the women who this boy attacked for providing us with a good case to prosecute. Nobody deserves to be preyed upon in this way and I only hope that these women can now rest easier knowing that this boy is no longer on the streets."

Gorton man jailed for life after a six-week crime spree.
Kelly A man has today, Tuesday 16 September 2008, been jailed for life after a six-week crime spree where he robbed three people at gunpoint.

Michael James Kiely (born 02/07/83) of Calbourne Crescent, Gorton, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square and ordered to serve a minimum of five years behind bars before he will be eligible to apply for parole.

He pleaded guilty to four charges of robbery, two charges of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, two charges of possession of a firearm while committing a robbery and one charge of arson.

In August and September 2007, Kiely robbed his victims at gunpoint and threatened them hand over their property.

In one offence, on Thursday 23 August 2007, the driver of an Audi A4 was hit from behind on Town Lane by Kiely, who was driving a stolen Volkswagen Transporter.

Kiely got out and admitted the crash was his fault, but when the driver showed him the damage to the Audi, Kiely claimed that there was none.

When the driver bent down to point out the damage in detail, Kiely hit him over the head knocking him unconscious.

When he regained consciousness, his car, keys and wallet were gone.

On Saturday 1 September 2007, Kiely drove into another car, this time an Audi TT, on Hillcrest Road.

The 38-year-old woman driving the Audi, who was pregnant at the time, got out to exchange her details with Kiely. He punched her in the face, got inside the car and drove off.

On Tuesday 4 September 2007 a man was smoking outside his house on Farrant Road in Lonsight, when a man approached him and started talking to him.

Thinking that the man was someone he knew, the victim invited him inside the house for a drink.

Once inside, the man said he had another friend, Michael Kiely, who was waiting outside. He then brought him inside the house.

While they were sitting in the living room, Kiely sat next to the victim and tried to steal from his pockets.

The victim resisted and started defend himself against Kiely with nunchucks. But on his way out of the house, Kiely produced a handgun and fired it three times.

On Sunday 9 September 2007, a Vauxhall Corsa was stolen from a car park on Kirksmanhulme Lane in Belle Vue. It was later found burnt out, and police inquiries revealed that Kiely was responsible for the arson.

On Friday 14 September 2007, Kiely knocked on the door of a house on Meldreth Drive, Longsight.

When a 17-year-old girl opened the door, Kiely pointed a gun at her and demanded cash.

Later on same day, Kiely threw a gate through the front window of a house on Meldreth Drive, Longsight.

He then went inside the house and tried to go up the stairs. The 19-year-old occupant of the house tried to push Kiely back from the top of the stairs.

Kiely then fired a gun at the victim, grazing the inside of his arm. The victim ran upstairs, left the house through an upstairs window, breaking his ankle as he landed.

In the meantime, Kiely had driven off in the victim's Vauxhall Corsa.

Kiely was eventually arrested the following day, after being stopped by police in the stolen Corsa.

Detective Sergeant Rob Cousen said: "Kiely was prepared to terrorise people during this crime spree.

"He was on the rampage to get his hands on anything he could.

"Given the number of shots that were fired during the course of these incidents it is fortunate that nobody was injured or killed."

Three prolific criminals behind bars thanks to a major Greater Manchester Police operation
Three prolific criminals who committed a string of burglaries during a 22-day spree are today behind bars thanks to a major Greater Manchester Police operation.

Joshua Carrigan (born 24/10/1989) of High Bank, Gorton, Daniel Barnes (born 31/05/1989) of Oxton Street in Openshaw and Liam Gilmore (born 29/12/1989) of Darras Road, Gorton, have today, Tuesday 9 September 2008, been sentenced to a total of 11 years in jail.

All pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit burglary when they appeared before Minshull Street Crown Court on 23 July 2008. Gilmore admitted he was responsible for four burglaries, one robbery and assaulting a police officer, Barnes admitted his part in six burglaries and Carrigan admitted being responsible for eight burglaries.

Gilmore was given three and a half years in prison for burglary and four years for robbery to run concurrently. He was also given six months for assaulting a police officer to run consecutively. Barnes received three and a half years in prison and Carrigan was given a three-year sentence.

The prolific trio formed part a gang responsible for 19 burglaries over a 22-day period in the Tameside and south Manchester areas during October 2007.

In each case, the gang would target homes which had large plasma TVs visible from the street, turn up in a stolen car and force their way into the house, stealing the TV and any other items of value.

So convinced they would not be caught, the gang even went as far as to post pictures of themselves in the stolen vehicles on the Internet. Operation Cummeric was launched by Greater Manchester Police to track down the gang and bring them to justice. This was a huge operation involving not just officers from Tameside but also from the north Manchester and Metropolitan divisions supported by the Force Intelligence Branch (FIB).

Using covert surveillance techniques, officers established the gang were using Carrigan's home as their base and would plan all there criminal activities from there. And although they would use dark clothing, gloves and hoods to conceal their identities, footwear impressions found at the homes burgled were positively identified as belonging to the gang.

On 1 November 2007, Barnes, Carrigan and Gilmore were spotted by police moving TVs. Barnes and Carrigan were subsequently arrested but Gilmore fled. The TVs were recovered and it was established they had been stolen during two burglaries earlier that day.

Days later, Gilmore was arrested and charged. He was released on bail with strict conditions and given a tag and a curfew. However, on 30 March 2008, he was part of a gang that robbed a house on Betley Road in North Reddish. Unfortunately for Gilmore, the occupants were home and during a scuffle, managed to rip the tagging device from his ankle.

He was then charged with this offence.

Detective Inspector Ged O'Connor, based at Tameside CID, said: "This was a major police operation which used a large number of officers from various divisions and covert surveillance techniques to put these prolific offenders behind bars.

"It is a success story both for the Tameside division and Greater Manchester Police as a whole to see these three men behind bars, and shows the Force is committed to bringing those who commit burglaries to justice.

"Over a short period of time, these three men caused havoc in a number of communities and anybody who has ever been a victim of a burglary will know how deeply upsetting it is to have your home invaded.
"These are three arrogant men who did not give their victims a second thought. They only thought of the buzz they were getting out of their crimes and were arrogant enough to pose on the Internet in their stolen vehicles.

"However, their arrogance was very much misplaced and thanks to this major police operation, they will now have plenty of time to think about what they have done from their cells."

A man tried to rape a teenager at knifepoint in a Gorton park
shotgun Sometime between 11.45pm on 9 June 2008 and 12.30am on 10 June 2008, the 16-year-old girl was walking through Debdale Park on Hyde Road with her dog when she was followed by a man riding a white mountain bike.

The victim tried to run away but was pursued by the offender, who pushed her through a gateway and threatened to stab her if she did not tie up her dog. Frightened, the victim did as he asked and she was then forced to the floor as the offender repeated his threat to stab her.

Luckily, the woman was able to struggle free and escape. The offender then fled on his bike.

Police have now released an E-fit of the man who is responsible for the attack.

He is described as a white man, of medium build, about 6ft tall and with brown hair tied back into a ponytail down to the middle of his back. He also had brown facial hair under his lower lip about 1cm long. He was wearing a black jacket with a black peaked cap, black tracksuit bottoms with an elasticated waist, white trainers and a white knee-length T-shirt.

The bike he was riding was described as white with a thin frame, a black seat, thin spokes and a red reflector on the post under the seat.

Detective Inspector Terry Crompton, from Longsight CID, said: "Luckily for the victim, she was able to escape before her attacker had been able to carry out his threat.

"Unless you have been a victim of this sort of crime, you cannot imagine the fear this man inflicted upon this woman, and it is vital he is apprehended.

"We are doing everything in our power to catch this man and I do not want the community to be alarmed. Incidents of this nature are very rare.

"If anyone does have any information about the incident, or recognises the man in the E-fit, please come forward and speak to us. Put yourself in the shoes of the victim for one minute and you will see why it is so important we find this man and bring him to justice."

Anyone with information should call Longsight CID on 0161 856 4250 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Seven people have today, Tuesday 10 June 2008, been sentenced to a total of 21 years and four months in prison for their role in a people trafficking operation in Manchester.

The victim, a 31-year-old woman from the Czech Republic, was brought over to Manchester in 2005 following promises of a better life, but was instead forced into prostitution and raped.

Gejza Kaco, born 13/11/83, of Louisa Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to trafficking into the UK, trafficking in the UK, controlling prostitution for gain and rape. He has been sentenced to eights years imprisonment.

Julius Tomi, born 25/04/85, of Brompton Road, Fallowfield, pleaded guilty to trafficking into the UK, trafficking in the UK, one count of controlling prostitution for gain. He has been sentenced to four years imprisonment.

Aneta Goralova, born 17/09/86, of Louisa Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain. She has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Bozena Kacova, born 15/04/77, of Louisa Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain. She has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Marian Cervenak, born 20/09/79, of Louisa Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain. He has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Julius Dano, born 30/12/58, of Lees Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain. He has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment. Gabriella Bendikova, born 14/01/85, of Lees Street, Openshaw, pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain. She has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment. Martin Sivak, born 25/11/84 of Morley Avenue, Fallowfield, pleaded guilty to possession of a false identification document and was sentenced to eight months in prison last month. The judge also made the recommendation that all offenders sentenced today be deported, with the exception of Julius Dano and Gabriella Bendikova. The investigation codenamed Operation Jutland was borne out of a joint operation with Lancashire Police, Operation Willow, which saw seven people sentenced in May 2007. This victim was brought to the attention of GMP in December 2006, after being identified by the victim of Operation Willow as someone she had met through working in brothels in Manchester. Officers specially trained to deal with the most sensitive of cases interviewed the woman and the full extent of her ordeal was gradually revealed.

Kaco used the victim's children to control her, threatening to sell them for their organs or pornography if she did not do as he asked. She was intimidated and forced to depend on the defendants, as she had no money for herself or her children and could see no way out.

Detective Inspector Mike Sanderson from the Sexual Crime Unit said: 'Today we have once again seen some very dangerous people brought to justice for their role in the horrific and degrading sexual exploitation of a vulnerable woman.

'Women in these situations suffer horrific abuse and are often kept in kidnap-style situations which they feel helpless to get out of. Trafficking and sexual exploitation is a form of modern day slavery that we are determined to stop. The victim in this case was looking to make a better life for her two children when she agreed to come to Manchester, but instead she was threatened, raped and forced into prostitution.

'Fortunately we were able to offer a way out once she felt comfortable enough to open up to us about what was happening to her.

'This has been a very long and complicated investigation due to the number of defendants, the international dimension and language issues, but I am pleased to see that the hard work has paid off in making sure these people are no longer free to put more women in danger.'

The victim, a 31-year-old woman, was born and grew up in the Czech Republic.

She was identified as a result of a joint investigation into human trafficking by GMP and Lancashire Police in 2006. After telling the police her story the woman was taken into police protection and Greater Manchester Police launched a separate investigation after it became clear she was also a victim of human trafficking.

She came over to Manchester in August 2005 following promises of a job working in a shop and the opportunity to make a better life for her and her two children.

She travelled with her children using tickets paid for by the Kaco family and was taken to an address on Louisa Street in Openshaw, Manchester. She was told that Kaco's girlfriend Goralova would look after her children while she worked.

Kacova, Cervenak, Kaco and Goralova all lived at the house and the victim was told she would also live there with her two children. On the first night Kaco took the victims personal documentation away from her saying it was to prevent her from running away and that she would be beaten if she did not respect him.

The next day Kaco told the victim that she would be working as a prostitute and giving all the money she earned to him. He threatened to kill her and sell the children if she refused to obey him and she took his threats seriously.

Kaco told the victim that she had to have sex with him so he would know how much he could charge for her. The victim tried to put him off by threatening to tell his girlfriend if he tried anything but he told her he would beat her until the blood poured out of her if she did. He then raped her.

Over the next seven months Kaco made the victim sell her body for sex. He would take her to various addresses to have sex with men, arranged for her to work in brothels, and would also drive around the streets stopping and asking men if they wanted sex with her for £25.

In February 2006 the 31-year-old discovered she was pregnant but was told by Kaco that she could only have an abortion if she earned enough money. She never got the abortion.

When Kaco realised he was being investigated under Operation Willow, he sent the victim and her children to the Czech Republic in March 2006. She stayed with Kaco's parents but when Kaco followed her over a couple of months later, the victim was once again forced to work in brothels. Kaco told the victim that she was free to leave at anytime but said her children belonged to him and had to stay.

In August 2006 the victim returned to England but was forced to leave her baby son behind. On this occasion she went to live with Tomi who made her work as a prostitute on the streets despite only giving birth two weeks earlier. The woman was told that T omi and his father Dano had paid Kaco £900 for her.

The victim was identified in December 2006 as a result of inquiries regarding Operation Willow. Her children were retrieved and she was taken into police protection.

Bungling Gorton Gunman Sentenced.
A 17-year-old boy who accidentally shot his accomplice while attempting to shoot another man in Chorlton-on-Medlock on Saturday 11 August 2007, has been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.

Leon Haynes (30/03/1990) of Craig Road, Gorton was found guilty of attempted murder on Friday 7 March 2008. He had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm. The judge gave him an indeterminate sentence for public protection and said he should serve a minimum of 12 years in prison before he could be considered for parole.

Covi Henry (24/10/83) of New Vine Street in Hulme was also found guilty of possession of a firearm on Friday 7 March 2008. He was sentenced to eight years in prison.

At 2.30pm on Saturday 11 August 2007 the 24-year-old victim was walking with friends in the area around Kerfield Walk and Skerry Close in Chorlton-on-Medlock when they were approached by a group of men on mountain bikes.

Some weeks earlier Henry had spoken to the victim and told him: "I'm coming for you, you're getting it".

When he saw him on 11 August, Henry said to the victim: "Remember what I said to you last time?" He told Haynes to "get the strap out", meaning the gun.

Haynes produced a gun from the waistband of his trousers and pointed it at the victim. He fired the gun and accidentally shot Henry in the neck. He discharged the gun four more times and hit his victim in his forearm and stomach.

The victim managed to get away and contacted an ambulance. He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which had the potential to be life threatening.

Henry also fled the scene and was later treated by paramedics. He was arrested later that day

While giving his evidence Haynes told the court he was a gang member and described himself as a "Gunman prepared to kill to defend himself".

Detective Sergeant Gary Smith from Longsight CID said: "This shows the damage that guns can do if they fall into the wrong hands. Haynes could have killed two people in August last year, one of whom was supposed to be his friend.

"We are committed to removing these weapons from the streets and will continue to work to do this.

"If anyone has any information about guns in their community I would urge them to contact the police. These weapons are indiscriminate and, as this case has shown, it is not only the intended target who can be injured by them."

Changes made to New East Manchester's regeneration plans
Changes have been made to New East Manchester's regeneration plans for the next decade following a major consultation exercise that involved 30,000 households in east Manchester.

Local people were asked to comment on a draft document that identified three core objectives and eight key priorities to guide the regeneration programme over the next ten years and to achieve the long term, sustainable regeneration of east Manchester.

The consultation process lasted for three months and included a range of different methods of involving residents from drop in sessions and leaflets to every household to a mobile information staff, web site and surveys aimed at young people. Over 800 residents attended drop-ins and well in excess of a thousand people took time to fill in surveys and record their views.

Following the consultation, several changes have been made to the East Manchester Strategic Regeneration Framework that maps out the regenerations plans for the area from now until 2018. In the Abbey Hey area of Gorton, following discussions with residents, use of land has been changed to retain open space and allotments and to prioritise areas of housing for improvement. Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour was identified as a major concern amongst local people so this has now been made a higher priority. The focus of the framework won't just be on families. A greater emphasis will also be placed on the positive aspects of old age. The area has an aging population and more inter-generation activities will be encouraged as older people provide important role models for young people.

Eddie Smith, Acting Chief executive at New East Manchester said: "This second Strategic Development Framework takes account of some of the big challenges and opportunities that weren't available in 2000 so it was important to get residents input. Overall the draft framework was well received. The level of attendance at events and the number of responses received indicate a high degree of success in achieving the key aim of sharing information with all interested parties, allowing everyone the opportunity to voice their opinions and to influence the future of their area. We have amended the Framework to take account of residents' views and are confident that not only does it truly represent the views of the East Manchester community but that it will provide the basis for continuing the strong progress that has been made."

The final Strategic Regeneration Document will include new targets for New East Manchester for the next decade. These include:
Damien Bourke, Policy and Partnership Manager at the NWDA, said: "The ongoing regeneration of East Manchester continues to make an important contribution to the growth of the Greater Manchester and regional economy. This change of emphasis reflects not only the visible successes we have seen within the area, but also the renewed ambition and aspirations of the local residents. New East Manchester has settled on a series of targets which will help ensure that East Manchester will benefit from a stronger, more diverse local economy, with more of its people living and working in an environment which will attract more families and workers back to the area."

The funeral of a serving GMP officer killed when his police van overturned, will take place at East Lancashire Crematorium, Cemetery Road, Radcliffe, Manchester at 1.30pm on Monday 28 January 2008.

PC Christopher Hart, 40, a response officer based in Bury, died after the police van he was driving was involved in a road collision in Openshaw on Saturday 12 January 2008.

The family cortege will leave Bury Police Headquarters at 12.45pm and travel to the crematorium for 1.30pm.

The cortege will take the following route from Bury Police Headquarters: Irwell Street, Bolton Street, Jubilee Way, A58 Bury and Bolton Road, Higher Ainsworth Road, Greenbank Road and onto Cemetery Road.

Traffic will be stopped for a matter of seconds as the cortege approaches each of the junctions along the route.

There are no restrictions planned, although there may be some congestion due to parking around the actual crematorium for the duration of the service.

Two mounted officers will join the front of the cortege at the junction of Greenbank Road and Cemetery Road, and will then lead the procession into the crematorium grounds.

A guard of honour will be formed on arrival of the hearse. PC Hart's colleagues will form the bearer party. The service will last for about 45 minutes.
