Woman who hid the bodies of sister and brother-in-law will join her partner in jail.
A woman who hid the bodies of her sister and brother-in-law for three days will join her partner, convicted of their murders, in jail.

Esther Thisleton (27/11/70) of Belvoir Avenue, Levenshulme pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice on Friday 23 November 2007. She has been sentenced today, Thursday 20 December 2007, to 15 months in jail. She will also serve a further 15 months as a suspended sentence.

Derek Blair (also Billington, born 20/04/65) of the same address has pleaded guilty to murdering Dennis and Maria White in their own home. He was sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 25 years.

Derek Blair decided to kill Dennis and Maria White (born 09/12/44 and 27/11/57 respectively), despite the fact that they had taken him in when he was destitute. On Monday 28 May he attacked Maria White, who struggled with mobility, with a hammer in the front room of the house. He then went upstairs to where Dennis was sleeping and hit him four or five times in the head with the hammer. Dennis died almost instantly. However, Maria's injuries were not sufficient to kill her. She spent that night dazed, with Blair repeatedly telling her that the emergency services were on their way. They were not.

On Tuesday 29 May 2007, whilst en route to the post office, Blair told Thistleton he had killed her sister. They then withdrew over £430 of Maria White's disability allowance from her account, using her card. That afternoon Derek Blair and Esther Thistleton checked themselves into the Diamond Lodge Hotel in Gorton. They are shown on CCTV arriving at the hotel, and spent the evening drinking pink champagne before staying the night.

They returned to the house the next day. Esther later claimed that she wanted to leave but Derek wouldn't let her.

On Thursday 31 May Derek and Esther argued, and Esther stayed the night at her friend's house. Just after 11.00am on Friday 1 June 2007 police received a report that a domestic incident was happening at the White's house on Belvoir Avenue. On arrival officers found the house quiet. After a look around the surrounding area, they eventually managed to gain entry. When the officers went inside they found Esther Thistleton sitting calmly on the stairs. She pointed to the front room and told police that her sister's body was in there. Maria White's body was discovered slumped on the couch. Dennis White's body was found upstairs. The couple had both been badly beaten and had multiple head injuries.

Thistleton and a 16-year-old boy were both arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene and an investigation was launched. Later that day Derek Blair handed himself in to police, confessing to both murders. He was temporarily detained under the Mental Health Act for assessment before being charged on 13 June 2007.

After being bailed, Thistleton and the 16-year-old were charged with perverting the course of justice on 28 August 2007.

Charges against the 16-year-old have been allowed to lie on file.

Detective Inspector Andy Richardson who lead the inquiry said: "This was the brutal premeditated murder of a kind couple who had agreed to take in Blair and Thistleton when they needed somewhere to live. We believe Derek Blair had their house in his sights. He is clearly a very vicious and dangerous man.

"It is a disturbing thought that these people stayed in that house on Belvoir Avenue for days with the bodies of their relatives. How someone could do this to their own family is absolutely beyond me."

CYCLISTS URGED TO BRIGHTEN UP
Bicycle riders in Manchester are being urged to step their visibility up a gear now the evenings are getting darker.

Last year 22 cyclists' were killed or seriously injured on the city’s roads and police officers warn that failing to use correct lights is dangerous and illegal.

"Cycling is a great way to travel around the city but it is essential that riders are clearly visible," explained Superintendent Nadeem Butt of Greater Manchester Police. "The law requires cyclists out at night to have both front and rear lights fitted, as well as suitable reflectors. Anyone who breaks the law in this way risks both their own safety as well as that of other motorists and pedestrians."

According to statistics from the Department for Transport, 227 pedal cyclists were injured on the city’ roads in 2006.

Supt Butt said: "This advice applies not only to keen cyclists or commuters, but also to young people out with their friends. Therefore, I’m also urging all parents to make sure their children take the necessary safety steps, as required by the law."

Cyclists are reminded that it is illegal to ride on pavements or the wrong way up one-way streets, unless a sign says otherwise. It is also recommend that cyclists ride well clear of the kerb and wear bright clothing to increase visibility.

AT LAST!
Plans Work is actually going to start on the new Market Hall. Workmen will be on site from Monday 15th October and after many disappointing setbacks people in Gorton will finally start to beleive that a new district centre is going to be built.

The completion dates for the new centre have again been move back but at least the sight of people working should raise local hope.

A number of consultation events are being held around Gorton and I was so disappointed that so few local people turned up to the event I attended.

Gorton will improve. It may not be to everyones taste but whatever happens, it has got to be better than what we have now.

At about 11.50pm on Thursday 9 August 2007, officers were patrolling the Langport Avenue and Cochrane Avenue area of Ardwick when they noticed two men crouching in the grounds of a school.

When the men realised police had seen them, they split up and ran off.

The firearm recovered is a 9mm Baikal SL handgun with ammunition.

Chief Superintendent David Keller from GMP's Metropolitan Division said: "On Wednesday, the Chief Constable announced extra resources were being directed into this area of Manchester to tackle gun crime and provide reassurance during the current climate.

"The recovery of this firearm is a direct result of that increased police presence.

"Officers are patrolling the streets of Manchester and are constantly on the look out for this sort of suspicious behaviour.

"We have had some great feedback from local people who have been really pleased to see so many police officers on patrol. But we still need the support of local people to help us continue to remove guns from the streets of Manchester. The police cannot solve this problem alone. We need the help of the community, your community.

"In this case, a man has been arrested and a gun has been taken off the streets. We will never know what we have prevented by intercepting the actions of these people, but one thing is for sure, that gun had the potential to cause misery and destroy lives."

WATCH OUT FOR TV BURGLARS
East Manchester residents are being urged to step up their security after a spate of incidents in which burglars have forced their way into homes to steal flat screen televisions.

Seven LCD and plasma televisions have been stolen from homes in Abbey Hey and Gorton since the beginning of March and police warn that more could be burgled unless residents take extra care.

"These TVs are extremely desirable for criminals as they’re expensive and easy to carry," said Temporary Inspector Jane Taylor of Gorton and Levenshulme’s Neighbourhood Policing Team. "If a burglar can see one through your front window he’ll look for any opportunity to steal it.

"I’m urging all residents, especially anyone who owns an expensive TV, to make sure their home has secure locks fitted to doors and windows. As the summer approaches it’s also worth remembering that these criminals will be looking for opportunities to sneak in through open windows while you’re in the garden or in another part of the house."

In six of the incidents, burglars entered homes by kicking or forcing open exterior doors.

For details on how to make your home more secure, contact Community Safety Co-ordinator Heather Kingdom on 0161 856 1377.

Anyone with information about crime in Abbey Hey or Gorton is asked to call the local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 4288 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

He had yellowing teeth and the bottom teeth were decaying. He was wearing black jeans and a creased shirt. He's believed to be local to the Gorton area.

Detective Chief Inspector Vanessa Jardine said: "This is a truly shocking attack on a young mother returning home.

"This man is clearly a dangerous individual and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen this attack to come forward. "It happened in daylight on a path that is popular with local people. We believe someone must have seen something - either the attack itself, the victim pushing her pram or the man himself.

"As a result of this incident we would urge women in the Gorton area to be particularly aware of their surroundings."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a man fitting this description acting suspiciously in the area, can call Longsight CID on 0161 856 4264 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Shots fired, Gorton
Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the window of a family home was smashed when shots were fired in Gorton last night, Friday 9 March 2007.

Shortly after 10.45pm police were called to Turner Street in Gorton following reports of a damaged window. Officers attended and discovered that the damage had been caused by a bullet. In addition to the window there was also damage to an internal wall.

When the shots were fired a couple and three young children were at the house. No-one was injured during this incident.

At this stage it is not believed that this address was specifically targeted.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Hassall from Longsight CID said: "There is nothing to indicate that this family were deliberately targeted in any way, however their lives were put at risk by the people carrying these guns.

"Luckily no-one was injured on this occasion but this could have been much worse as it could have resulted in serious injury or even the death of these innocent people or their very young children. I would ask people in the community to let us know who was responsible for this and we will do the rest.

"Guns don't just hurt the people who carry them, this mindless criminal act could have taken the life of an innocent child. Luckily this has not been the case."

Anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Turner Street area at around 10.45pm, or who knows who is responsible for firing this shot, is asked to contact Longsight CID on 0161 856 4298 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

An Old Gortonian Returns Home

Last summer saw the return of an elderly Gortonian to Manchester after a period of 56 years in exile in the Midlands - The 'local' in question is in the form of one of the products of Crossley Motors, the famous local firm that supplied buses to Manchester for twenty years.

bus Crossley 'Mancunian', fleet number 436, whose chassis was built at the Crossley Factory on Gorton Lane, entered service with Manchester Corporation Transport in January 1934 and although the bus was initially based at Princess Road depot and later in its service life moved to Queens Road depot, it spent the period from 1936 to 1946, including the whole of the Second World War, based at Hyde Road depot in Ardwick.

It would doubtless have spent much of its time on the famous '53' route and also the '8' service, passing up and down Hyde Road, through Gorton, on its way to and from Piccadilly to Dane Bank, Denton and Hyde.

Bus 436 (registration ANB851) is as important to Manchester's - and indeed the UK's public transport history as Gorton Monastery - next to which it was built - is to world heritage. 436 is very special as it was the first ever Crossley Mancunian (the typical 'Manchester Bus' of the pre-war period) to be produced. Its original Birmingham-made body was replaced in 1938 by one of the first 5 'production' all-Crossley steel-frame bodies, again made in Gorton, and put together by Transport Department staff at the 'Car Works', which still stands next to Hyde Rd bus depot. 436 was the forerunner of hundreds of durable bus chassis and bodies which were built on Crossley Street and Gorton Lane after the War, for operators both in the UK and all over the world.

Withdrawn from service in Manchester in January 1950, the bus spent the next 25 years, firstly as a storeroom and later a holiday caravan on the moors in Shropshire before being rescued by the Midlands preservationist, from whom the Museum of Transport in Cheetham Hill acquired it last June.

436 is the oldest Manchester Corporation double deck bus and also the oldest Crossley double decker to survive. It is currently on display at the Museum ( www.gmts.co.uk) and takes pride of place in the collection, pending the start of major restoration work. Though largely complete and sound for a bus that is 73 years old, putting 436 back to its 1938 condition is likely to be a lengthy and expensive process.

Manchester commended in Parliament for its pioneering wireless communications network that is being used to benefit the community.

An Early Day Motion tabled in Parliament by John Leech MP has drawn attention to the City of Manchester and its wireless network infrastructure.

Amid significant publicity from competing cities including Birmingham, Milton Keynes, London and Brighton, Manchester has witnessed the implementation of what is claimed by the network operator, Manchester Metronet, to be the most powerful urban broadband wireless communications infrastructure in the world.

The capability of Manchester's wireless network is best demonstrated by its ability to support remote CCTV monitoring, an application that demands that very high levels of bandwidth are available at all times to support two way communications. Relaying live CCTV video with acceptable quality and, at the same time enabling reverse communications to control the cameras' point, tilt and zoom functionality, has been a challenge beyond the capability of other wireless network operators.

An Early Day Motion (detailed below) tabled by John Leech Member of Parliament for Manchester Withington, highlights the public/private partnerships that have made it possible for the City to deliver the wireless communications network. In particular, Mr. Leech was keen to stress the community benefits realised as a result of the network's deployment.

21st Century CCTV Monitoring Serving Community Needs
CCTV deployment is traditionally dependent upon the availability of powerful fibre-optic data communications circuits, which are inherently expensive to install and maintain, and require cameras to be left in a fixed position for an extended period of time; typically five years. In certain circumstances, the installation of fibre-optic cables is simply not logistically feasible.

A typical problem encountered by fixed wired CCTV cameras is that, once installed, the problem issues that they are intended to address often move on to another near-by location. With a wireless network, it is possible to move cameras as appropriate, which in turn addresses the 'Big Brother' concerns that are increasingly aired by the general public.

Combating crime
Greater Manchester Police has also embraced the opportunities presented by the coupling of a wireless communications network with CCTV monitoring.

"Using the wireless network," said Chief Inspector John McNeil, "GMP has no CCTV blind spots, enabling us to work in partnership with local communities to suppress nuisance and criminal activities. Wireless connectivity also affords us an opportunity to install cameras for temporary live covert monitoring to fight serious crime."

Prior to the implementation of a wireless network infrastructure, live CCTV monitoring was only possible with the installation of fixed wire connections. The installation lead time, coupled with a commercial requirement to commit to a long-term rental period, typically rendered live CCTV monitoring impractical. Off-line CCTV cameras recording images locally only allow incidents to be addressed after the event, and they are impractical for covert monitoring of specific criminals as it would be necessary for an officer to visit the site periodically to retrieve the data.

Using the Manchester Metronet wireless network, it is possible for Greater Manchester Police to deploy and redeploy cameras within hours.

Aiding Business and inward investment
Commerce in Manchester is expanding at an enormous rate with the City attracting inward investment from industries that have demanding high-tech requirements.

Commenting on the wireless initiative, Robbie Muirhead, POSITION, at MIDAS (Manchester's investment agency) said, "A major inward investment is clearly not going to happen because of the City's wireless broadband network. But it is an important unique selling point for the City and it sits well with the plethora of benefits that companies consider when seeking to relocate or expand into Manchester."

By way of illustration, Mr. Muirhead cites the opportunity for communications to be delivered on-site even before building a new facility. Construction site surveillance is a significant challenge for companies seeking to secure plant and machinery and monitor supplies delivery. The ability to move CCTV cameras as the site evolves makes it particularly attractive in environments which inherently demand flexibility. That the same network can be used to support voice and data communications into the site office is a real bonus.

Once the development is complete, the same communications infrastructure offers in-coming tenants an instant, secure communications solution for their voice and data requirements.

Paving the way for future City-wide communications
Manchester's world-beating wireless network offers residents and businesses a wealth of opportunities that are not enjoyed in other UK cities.

The Manchester Metronet has already been used to provide ad-hoc outside broadcast access for major events in the City demonstrating a capability unmatched elsewhere. Creative and Media, Financial and Professional and Shared Services/Logistics businesses are predicted to take advantage of the City's immediately available secure wireless broadband network that sets the benchmark that others will follow.

John Leech MP, commenting on the initiative said, "Manchester is a thriving and expanding City and its potential is increasingly recognised throughout the United Kingdom. This public private partnership innovation is an excellent example of how the City is embracing life in the 21st Century and I am pleased to offer it my support."

MANCHESTER METRONET AND THE WIRELESS NETWORK

27.11.2006
John Leech MP
That this House recognises the successful public/private partnership that has resulted in the City of Manchester leading the world in the delivery of a powerful wireless communications network capable of supporting data, voice and video communication; congratulates the Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council for their work in using the wireless network to support flexible CCTV monitoring that reflects local needs and which improves security for the public at large; and applauds the continued investment by the wireless network operator, Manchester Metronet, that has used North West based venture capital investment over a period of years to develop and complete the network infrastructure that brings unparalleled advantages to Manchester based public/private sector organisations when compared with those based in other United Kingdom cities.

SCHOOL CARS TO HELP DRIVE DOWN CRIME
Head teachers in parts of inner-city Manchester have joined together to drive down crime - by supplying school-based police officers with their own dedicated vehicles.

Two Skoda Fabias, a Nissan Micra and a Vauxhall Corsa have been loaned to the Manchester Metropolitan Division for one academic year, thanks to support from seven high schools.

"These extra vehicles help us to provide a better policing service to local schools." said Inspector John Egerton of the Community and Partnership Unit. "Our four school-based officers can now conduct more home visits, parental interviews, and truancy sweeps to make our schools and communities safer."

Although all of the schools are located in and around the Manchester Metropolitan Division, police officers will use the vehicles to visit pupils and parents across the city and in neighbouring towns.

The schools have also provided the four police officers with mobile phones to boost communication and discuss ongoing issues.

Head teachers provided the funding as part of the Safer Schools Partnership, which is supported by Excellence in Cities. Behaviour Improvement Programme.

John McNerney, Head Teacher at St Peters RC High School in Gorton said: "School-based police officers play an important role in helping to keep young people on the straight and narrow. The decision to provide school-based officers with cars and mobile phones reflects the strong partnership that exists between schools and police in the area."

Police officers began using the vehicles and mobile phones in September 2006 and have been given funding to use them until the end of the academic year in July 2007.
