GORTON SAYS
"TUB MUST STAY"

Members of the Save Gorton Tub campaign gathered at the Community House on Friday 26th January in order to Lobby Gerald Kaufman M.P. about the future of  Neptune's Kingdom, better known as the Gorton Tub.
The Tub has been earmarked for closure at the end of March this year, by the City Council who claim that it is under used and too expensive to run.
A large number of Gorton people are not happy with this and have banded together to fight the decision. They feel that the Council's basis for closure is flawed and at a well attended public meeting recently, had the opportunity to put their arguments to officials, including Cllr Glynn Evans, the Executive Member for Leisure and Culture.
Sadly, despite well informed argument from members of the campaign, the obvious committed opposition to closure from both the community and Gorton Councillors, there has been no change of heart by the Executive, so the campaigners determined to enlist the aid of Mr. Kaufman.
To their delight, he told the group that he recognised the importance of the pool to the community, and that he did not want it to close. He will, we are told, discuss the closure with the leader of the Council, Cllr. Richard Leese at a forthcoming meeting. In the meantime, the campaigners are planning to lobby the full Council on February 7th.
The Forum is fully behind this campaign. Our analysis, read Pulling the plug, page  15.
Please note that the Tub is still open, see back page. Use it, don't lose it!
Gorton market
is still very much in the public eye, and despite reassurances there are still a lot of people who are worried that the market is in terminal decline.
As has been previously reported in these pages, the Forum is working with all parties in order to ensure that the Market will prosper.
