DID YOU KNOW? That in 1237 the earliest reference to Gorton and Openshaw, spelled "Openshae", appears in a list, dated 1237 to 1238, of townships which had to pay a tax known as the "30th". In 1320 for the first time in the history of Gorton the names of Gorton people were recorded. This was a survey of the manor of Manchester made in 1322. They are: Henry the Reve, Geoffrey of the Abbey, Thomas of the Olres (Alders), Hugh of the Abbey, Emma the Widow, Hugh son of Richard. There is a reference in the survey to a flour mill in Gorton and a peat moss in Openshaw.
